Interviews

Image
Squid - Bugs Crawling Out Of People
Though not remarkably active release-wise, Bugs Crawling Out Of People has consistently released intense material which, despite a wide variety of styles, shares a visceral and deeply cynical vision of existence.

Reviews

Image
Unterm Rad - The Rake's Progress
A wonderfully experimental release and has the added bonus towards the end of a fair few remixes that add a new level to the journey, giving the tracks some essential edges that a few listeners out there may be craving for midway through the proceedings.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ad_trp.htm

Image
Ultraviolet - The Thin Line Between Love And Addiction
A pretty good album compared to many artists. Originality is always a problem in pop music, but at least Ultraviolet have taken some of the latest influences to use for their own ends, in quite an effective manner.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... tlblaa.htm

Image
V/A - ...Where Tattered Clouds Are Stranding
Certainly this compilation is worth listening to for anyone interested in neo-folk and dark ambient, but the Einar Jónsson connection could have been developed further and there are plenty of higher quality compilations available for those new to the scene.

Interviews

Image
Audiotrauma Collective - Audiotrauma
Though not very active as a label until recently, this young collective has already left an enduring mark in the field of undergroung electronic music, in France and abroad, both because of the pool of talent that makes up the collective and of the events that it organized and which culminated in the still-remembered Noxious Art festivals.

Reviews

Image
Fractional - Come Mierda
"Come Mierda" is, in essence, more like dark IDM than ambient, industrial or drum'n'bass, but will appeal to fans across all these genres for different reasons. Imagine a chimeric creation mingling Squarepusher, Panacea, Ah Cama-Sotz and Haujobb, and you'll have something approximating Fractional in mind.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... nal_cm.htm

Image
Absent - Children
A pretty good release that is sure to find adepts among appreciators of precise dark electronica but, in the end, there's a feeling that the relationship between the several media that comprise it isn't somewhat lopsided.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_absent_c.htm

Image
Electric Colony - Electric Colony
This album is definitely worth a listen; something you can play at work without drawing the eyebrows or criticism of your co-workers in neighboring cubes or when you're in the mood for something mellow without compromising on depth.

Reviews

Image
Flint Glass - Circumsounds
Flint Glass (Gwenn Trémorin), having built a name in post-industrial dark electronics through various releases, remixes and side projects (notably Tzolk'in), not to mention tireless creativity and production prowess, delivers a natural winner with "Circumsounds."
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... lass_c.htm

Image
Bisclaveret - Amalgame
Calling on the talents of various artists from the dark ambient, industrial and related genres, Bisclaveret compiled an interesting and varied set of reinterpretations of four of their original atmospheric tracks.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... eret_a.htm

Image
Critikal - Graphorrhea
"Graphorrhea" is defined as "the writing of long lists of meaningless words, as occurs in some manic disorders," a confused and volatile state which is very much the order of the day for the forty-minute duration of this offering from Critikal. A true meeting of opposites, "Graphorrhea" is a triumph.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ikal_g.htm

Image
V/A - Sonderling
A curious little release, this one. Fans of much of the output from the Ad Noiseam stable may find something amongst these tracks to keep them happy, and I would presume this is squarely the market this release aims at.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... erling.htm

Image
Everything Goes Cold - Prepare To Be Refrigerated
While Everything Goes Cold is effectively a comedy act, it is by no means a jokeand the musical delivery is dead serious. A solid and rather enjoyable release, "Prepare To Be Refrigerated" seems to suffer from a certain repetition with not enough original tracks and many remixes of those same tracks.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... d_ptbr.htm

Image
Mandelbrot - Thorns
A sophisticated jaunt of headphone euphoria that has the ability to dissolve useless distractions within the subconscious and allow uninhibited explorations into Mandelbrot's shadowy intentions.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... brot_t.htm

Image
V/A - Broken Line Remixes
The first thing that is evident when listening to this interesting collection of remixes is that it is a distinctly experimental and sometimes abstract reinterpretation of the source material that often bears little or no resemblance to the original content.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_blr.htm

Image
Mark Hamn - Je Déchire L'Ongle Aux Criminels
It would be fair to say that this album is a bit hit and miss and the artist's knowledge and fascination with music in film is very obvious when listening to it. A moderate success and certainly an artist to keep an eye on.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... jdloac.htm

Image
Freeze Etch - Vessels
With a mixture of foreboding experimental electronics and carefully modulated, spacious ambiences, Freeze Etch strives to capture a hard sci-fi theme (think of the album title, not to mention tracks like "Soarover" and "Freight Memory"), yet somehow misses its grasp at galactic brilliance.

Reviews

Image
Ad·ver·sary - Bone Music
This isn't a groundbreaking album by any means. It is, however, a deeply personal album made from a masterfully produced mix of genres.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ary_bm.htm

Image
Concrete Cookie & the Maggot Farmer - Mondegreen
An aptly titled aural malapropism, this is an engaging release that nods in the direction of other artists within its chosen genre, whilst keeping something back that marks out its own individuality.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... rmer_m.htm

Image
Thomas Watkiss - Ancestor - Phase 1: Silence
What is exceptional about "Silence" is its undeniable delicacy of movement. As with many of its peers, this is music of meditation and patience, funereal reverb and thick layers of emptiness. Its power lies in the understated and tentative, the barely audible oscillations, passionate organic textures and rumbling arrays.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... s_ap1s.htm

Image
Famine - Every Mirror Turns Black
A particularly painful album to categorize, as it represents somewhere in the vicinity of fourteen years of music production experience coming to a head. But that doesn't mean it's a bad album - on the contrary, Famine deliver something that's difficult to get into, but even harder to stop listening to.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... e_emtb.htm

Image
Perfection Plastic - Triomphe de la Matière
One of those albums to crank out before heading out for a night on the tiles. Fun, without threat, and will not be out of place sat in the collections of the hearts of you out there who simply like letting your hair down and not getting bogged down in technicalities.

Reviews

Blaerg - Dysphoric Sonorities
Blaerg effectively went beyond the breakcore paradigms of 'faster-harder-louder' and insane chaos, creating a truly captivating album - an interesting assortment of intelligent and methodical compositions with definite groove which, despite the title and the occasional harsher track, is actually quite laidback and bound to appeal to more than just the breakcore enthusiasts.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_blaerg_ds.htm

Image
Majdanek Waltz - Hamlet's Childhood
A well organized and well recorded album, full of emotional music, beautiful instrumentation and composition, and it will definitely enthrall you and keep you listening. Song after song, "Hamlet's Childhood" evokes grief and still stands out as an amazing industrial folk album.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ltz_hc.htm

Image
Insane Asylum - Caustic Factory Outlet
The distorted, discordant initial impression of this EP by Insane Asylum evolves into something more coherent and cohesive as time passes, eventually growing into something pleasantly noisy, rather than the slapdash arrangement it seems to be.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... um_cfo.htm

Image
V/A - Ressonus net vol.1
Where some ambient music is easily listenable, atmospheric stuff that can enhance or even alter a mood, this is, by and large, flat and lifeless, save for a few hounourable mentions. The intent is above reproach - individual, hand-crafted and unique musical endeavours - but the content fails to live up to it.

Reviews

Image
Fractional - Come Mierda EP
A short, sweet release from Belgian artist Fractional, this EP takes a selection of tracks from the full-length, "Come Mierda," adds a new number and throws in two remixes (from DJ Hidden and Cdatakill) to boot. It EP proves a worthwhile sampler, useful for DJs and collectors alike. A call for alternative remixed tracks than just the one would be the only complaint.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... l_cmep.htm

Image
Synnack - v2
With generous extras thrown in as here, and a quality of musicianship outshining some of the minor failings, "V2" is definitely a worthwhile release for anybody interested in the more industrial end of experimental electronica, another good reason to keep buying CDs in this iPod dominated age!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ack_v2.htm

Image
Alien Skin - Do Not Open Till Doomsday
So with no complaints other than the occasional cheesy lyric or annoying vocal effect, which accompany most synthpop albums of above average quality these days, Alien Skin's debut offers a maturity and expertise lacking in the majority of similar groups and is recommended.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... n_dotd.htm

Image
Xsoz - Basic Topology
"Basic Topology" lacks the solid foundation it needs to maintain a perpetual shelf life. With a little more essence added to the core of the Xsoz sound, Raptis may have something that will etch itself into the minds of his potential listeners; regrettably this just isn't that album.

Periodically we find albums like Gjöll's "Way Through Zero" which, unlike 75% of the same old, recycled garbage out there that passes for industrial nowadays, album still manages to evoke emotion without reeking of cheesy manufactured angst for angst's sake.

Image
Ninth Desert - Different Trouble Experiences Of Twilight
"Different Trouble Experiences of Twilight" is a confident, well-structured journey, one that requires more than one listen to fully appreciate, and which rewards listeners with a rich, uncluttered soundscape in which to lose themselves.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _dteot.htm

Image
Maurizio Bianchi & Sparkle In Grey - Nefelodhis
An enjoyable listen that goes across vast sonic territory, sometimes sounding something akin to dreamy shoegaze music and at other times disturbing noises and bizarre sounds. Although it covers a lot of territory, it manages good transitions so it doesn't have the problem of jumping all over the place.

Image
V/A - D-Trash Records Music Videos
The diversity of featured artists means there's something for everyone on this release, and the added bonus of the Jukebox feature makes it a very well rounded retrospective of D-Trash's work to date. Looking forward to the next ten years!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_dtrmv.htm

Image
Somegirl - The Velvet Hour
Though when listening to "The Velvet Hour" one gets a justified sense of déjà entendu, it remains a solid release. Nevertheless, good as it may be, Somegirl would certainly benefit from being more daring both musically as well as lyrically: the talent and creativity are there, they just have to tap it.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... rl_tvh.htm

Image
Kotra - Reset
If there was such a thing as 'avant-garde/experimental lounge music,' "Reset" could easily fit the description and purpose. In the meantime, "Reset" can feel like a work in progress, the aural version of the artist's notebook: it may be interesting but it's appeal is limited to a small audience and definitely an acquired taste.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_kotra_r.htm

Image
Nerthus - Urban
Plodding percussion and glitched-out synth lines whir throughout and are the backbone of the composition. Apt for a restless sleep or in accompaniment to an evening of hallucinogenic introspection, "Urban" will undoubtedly stir your thoughts.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_nerthus_u.htm

Image
Battery Cage - Forever Never Ends
All in all, "Forever Never Ends" is a musically diverse recording featuring some enjoyable moments, albeit its lack of focus and a scattering of influences will either enthrall or irk the listener, depending on who is wearing the headphones.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ge_fne.htm

Image
History Of Guns - Acedia
Overall, "Acedia" sounds almost exactly like what one might have imagined, back in the day, punk rock should be in the twenty-first century. Too bad, most punk rockers never looked beyond their narrow alleys, which History of Guns have clearly done. Maybe because they're not exactly punk rockers.

Connexion Bizarre update 20080901

Post by connexion » Mon Sep 01, 2008 11:30 pm

After a short hiatus of nearly a month we're back with a massive update!
As mentioned in the previous mailing, Connexion Bizarre saw some changes with this new mailing. Firstly is a slight redesign to give more overall coherence to the website. Secondly, and most important, is the addition of two new sections, one of online releases and a webstore (which already existed but to which was given greater proeminence).

The new "Releases" section is, after a fashion the new 'netlabel' arm of Connexion Bizarre. Rather than developing a de facto netlabel, the idea behind this initiative is simply to expand our work of showcasing new music by collaborating with artists and other music enthusiasts in this endeavour. Currently under development are several compilations following the format set with "You Are Here: A Compilation Of Wisconsin Electronics" (curated by none other than Matt Fanale of Caustic), originally released in early 2007, for which artists were selected based on geographical location rather than music genres.

While not a new addition to the site, the "Store" section was moved to greater proeminence. In addition to time and effort, Connexion Bizarre has its expenses and any revenue from sales will help to offset these. In addition to what is already available (Connexion Bizarre badges), there are plans for a couple of weird additions (which we hope will prove interesting) planned for the near future.

Anyway, enough blabber and on to the list of updates for the rentrée...

Webcast: "August 2008" with music selection by http://www.razorgrrl.com/ - DJ Razor*Grrrl and "Fiscal year 2008-2009 (step one)" with music selection by M.
Reviews: Roughhausen "The Agony of the Beat", Fluorescent Grey "Gaseous Opal Orbs", Junkboy "Three", V/A "nucd#02", Dissamonix "Disharmonic Universe", FT13 "The Great Disaster", Ebola "Mutant Dubstep Vol.1", Logoplasm "Testa Piena D'Orche", Psycho Shop "My Sweet Holocaust"
Interviews: Dmytro Fedorenko of Kvitnu
Releases: grouping all past Connexion Bizarre online releases in one 'netlabel' section with more releases to come soon.
Media: several installments of Business Traveller (yes, it was updated during August...)
Store: be the envy of your peers by getting a set of exclusive Connexion Bizarre badges!
Also this week, we announce the winner of the D-Trash Records giveaway (see below for details).

Incidentally, Connexion Bizarre is nearing 5 years of existence. That's a long time.

Dmytro Fedorenko - Kvitnu
Ukrainian label run by Dmytro Fedorenko (Kotra), started at the end of year 2006, with the aim to amplify the electronic experimental outputs from the land of Ukraine and to discover new musical variations from the outer world. Kvitnu concentrates on music and ideas with a high blood pressure in its sound-veins.

Reviews

Image
Roughhausen - The Agony of the Beat
Occasionally, little wonders slip through the cracks and escape the notice of record labels. Roughhausen's "Agony of the Beat" is such a specimen - varied, dynamic, danceable and eminently listenable, all rolled into one, this release is truly a reviewer's joy.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _taotb.htm

Image
Fluorescent Grey - Gaseous Opal Orbs
Unlike many bands sheltering under the 'experimental' tag, this guy rarely falls into comfortable predictability, and many of the tracks sound pretty far removed from your intial impressions by the end. The overall result is rather jolly, and reminds you that quirky avant-garde music can be fun, and needn't be listened to on Sennheisers in a darkened room.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ey_goo.htm

Image
Junkboy - Three
"Three" might well be called vapid or monotonous by impatient critics looking for something less hermitic and more conspicuous than idle, syrup-dipped compositions. However, it is precisely these jejune traits that lend Junkboy its special, engrossing character. When the mood is right, "Three" fits just fine.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_junkboy_t.htm

Image
V/A - nucd#02
Numusic Records compiled "nucd#02" to showcase the varied styles of electronic music represented at their music festival. Compiled from a range of international and Norwegian artists, especially those from the immediate Stavanger area of Norway where the label resides, the mix of genres represented is varied and contrasting, representing the diversity of the artists appearing at the event.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_nucd2.htm

Image
Dissamonix - Disharmonic Universe
This German duo's sound covers a wide range, from lurching beats and swirly guitar to calm spasms and spaced-out ambience. Often off-kilter and detuned, but routinely interesting, "Disharmonic Universe" stays true to its name as Dissamonix dispatches seven tracks of structured slow-motion mayhem, full of bass frequencies and tripped-out beats.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... nix_du.htm

Image
FT13 - The Great Disaster
A bit heavy on the angst, a bit light on sincerity. Focusing either on a harsher, more stripped-down minimalist sound or opting for depth and technicality, rather than vacillating between the two poles, would improve the end result no end.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_ft13_tgd.htm

Image
Ebola - Mutant Dubstep Vol.1
Haemorrhagic reactions abound when listening to this four-track teaser EP that merely hints at what may yet be to come. Overall, excitement levels when confronted by this recording did not match the anticipated response - a breakcore/gabba/dubstep crossover works far better in theory than in practice...
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... a_mdv1.htm

Image
Logoplasm - Testa Piena D'Orche
Logoplasm's realm of feedback and pink noise, voyeurism and mundanity, and comfort and fear challenges listeners to discover significance in the thirty-five minutes of "Testa Piena D'Orche" (meaning "head full of orcas") - a struggle that may well leave some wanting.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... m_tpdo.htm

Image
Psycho Shop - My Sweet Holocaust
Although Psycho Shop have an impressive collective experience when it comes to making music, this does not translate that effectively when listening to "My Sweet Holocaust", their first studio album. Although the combination of ethereal female with harsh male vocals has been a successful formula for other darkwave/EBM acts in the past, it doesn't gel quite as well here.

Connexion Bizarre update 20080908

Post by connexion » Mon Sep 08, 2008 7:00 pm

Connexion Bizarre was updated on 2008-09-08 with new content. A couple of new reviews, an interview, new installment of the "Business Traveller" ongoing fiction series, new links and, last but not least, the release of the second volume of the "You Are Here" music compilation series.

Compiled by NY-based musician/DJ/promoter Ben Dewalt (better known for his alias Terrorfakt and DJ Hellraver), "You Are Here Vol.2: a Compilation of New York Electronics" features a selection of tracks by emerging and confirmed artists from the New York electronic music underground, in styles ranging from Experimental and Industrial to IDM, Power Electronics and Rhythmic Noise. Released under a Creative Commons license, this compilation follows from last year's compilation dedicated to the state of Wisconsin (still available from our releases section) and will soon be followed by others following the same concept. Currently in the works are compilations for the states of California, Illinois and Massachussetts, with other states and countries already being considered. Scroll down for more details and download links.

Anyway, here's a quick overview of this week's updates:

Reviews

VortexSoundTech - Fiery Silence
Throughout the entire album, the listener is presented with introverse, rich, textured industrial soundscapes that mutate and narrow into upbeat electro melodies - only to be blown out into heavy, suppressing basslines, accompanied by atmospheric, minimalistic orchestral pieces that further evolve into dark, psychadelic, multilayered and slightly off-kilter synthlines.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ech_fs.htm

Mangadrive - These.Blades.Will.Never.Rust
Unapologetic, hi-energy dance music, pure, simple and unadulterated by lofty ideals and messages. Mangadrive bangs out a blistering rhythmic tattoo into the unsuspecting skulls of its listeners, an aural shot of espresso that has the potential to kickstart any dancefloor. And that includes the mainstream.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _tbwnr.htm

Faux Pride - Slapstick Bitch
Despite a few ear-grabbing moments "Slapstick Bitch" is not a thrilling listen. While the artist seems quite at ease and competent at creating intense hardcore tracks, that clearly isn't the case when he tries his hand at creating material on a more experimental style; perhaps he should concentrate and develop what he does best before moving on to territory where he is clearly less at ease.

Interviews

Aleksey Chechulin - Cold Graey
Cold Graey is one of those cases which proves that talent and creativity are not the exclusive of established record labels, thriving equally well in a do-it-yourself setting. With a roster of very talented artists, this obscure Russian label is worthy of note for the the care which they put into their extremely limited editions, as each superbly handcrafted release is a work of art on its own.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... dgraey.htm

Reviews

Renfro - Mathematics
Renfro's music in "Mathematics" must be appreciated like a fine wine: with time and without worries. As well as a great soundtrack for moments of solitude it is also something to be enjoyed in the company of a special someone. It is an amazing piece of work, surely bound to become a timeless and unforgetable classic for those who listen to it.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_renfro_m.htm

Nicholas Szczepanik - Iomicin
Judging from "Iomicin", mr. Szczepanik definitely is a creative individual and goes about his music in a unique way that keeps you guessing and keeps things interesting.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... anik_i.htm

V/A - Rückwärts Im Uhrzeigersinn
With sixteen exciting, genre-bending, atom-splitting cuts of the juiciest contemporary electronica this is a fairly laidback release overall but everything is just so damn listenable, you can easily forgive the artists for not kick-drum-blasting your eardrums out of the sides of your head.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_riu.htm

Kiethevez - Non-Binary
"Non-Binary" offers up eleven tracks of quality synthpop the likes of which the Swedes seem to be born to write, with no confusion about meaning or intent. A very accomplished and mature sounding record, where the years of experience are evident in the skilful combination of subtle synth work, considered guitar playing and clean, melodic singing.

Reviews

Tapage - The Institute Of Random Events
While there are a lot of events in each track, there's an enchanting minimal feel to the whole album. If you've been awake for too long, and require an album to help you think while you slowly pass out from exhaustion on your ugly couch - this is it! Or, if you wanted Hecq to do an album with breaks and click/pops, this might be as close as it gets.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _tiore.htm

Angelspit - Blood Death Ivory
Angelspit's highly visual methodology makes them stand out and, watered-down anarchic attitude notwithstanding, their music is not bad by any means. It's a lot of fun, something far too many bands overlook in their efforts to be 'dark'. The production quality is top-notch, too, and the lyrics, while not Shakespeare, carry a great sense of apathetic urban disillusionment.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... it_bdi.htm

STROM.ec - Divine Legions Beyond Psyche
In conclusion, STROM.ec show effortlessly how they can make harsh and aggressive power electronics as effectively as you want, but the important thing is how well they mix that up with dark ambient and experimental industrial passages, trying new ideas and never allowing things to become formulaic or stagnate.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... c_dlbp.htm

Murder By Static - Exsits
Though an enjoyable listen, this album could perhaps benefit from extended track lengths and more events would give each song more character. As IDM it's somewhat enjoyable, but it seems to incorporate the most boring aspects from other (sub?)genres of electronic music.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... atic_e.htm

ReAdjust - Statement
The main downfall of the album seemed to be a lack of good production/mastering. A stronger snare/clap could have really improved the sound of a few tracks, and all the sounds seemed to get lost in the mix. Remember one lesson that can be taken from cheesy-trance: even if the music is overdone and cliché, if it is produced well, the kids will love it.

Reviews

Mono-Amine - Industrial Thought Patterns
Not since Converter's legendary "Blast Furnace" have I felt quite as happy with my rivethead status. This is, without a doubt, some of the finest industrial/powernoise it has been my pleasure to listen to in a long time.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... .htm">Read more

AZ-Rotator - Indefinable Sugar Cube
"Indefinable Sugar Cube" can be a difficult album to get into initially and is not the best introduction to AZ-Rotator's work for the first-time listener. Nevertheless, it is an excellent piece of work and bound to please those who appreciate well-produced, complex IDM and abstract electronica with a playful twist.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... .htm">Read more

Integral - Rise
"Rise" is definitely an album that's been highly refined, with amazing production quality, and various parts have been worked on for a long time. Aside from a few regressive tendencies, it's an amazing release.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... .htm">Read more

Oszillotom - Energetika
Oszillotom create music that is deep, distorted and chaotic but do so in a perfectly calculated way that results in a collection of superbly realised tracks. Showcasing a range of styles from tense, dark ambient through to heavy multi-layered drones and visiting several points between the two extremes, Oszillotom show there is more to their music than wonderfully executed industrial noise.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... .htm">Read more

Myrrman - PorNOsmagoria
It's a malicious, unpleasant record, likely to scare away most listeners - unless you happen to like the foot-cramping vertigo that comes with an unwilling paradigm shift. For me, personally, it was wonderful, original mood music to accompany my lengthy commutes to and from work, inspiring all sorts of antisocial mental meandering...
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... .htm">Read more

C/A/T - The Great Crisis
"The Great Crisis" is both a simple machine and the maddening administrator of melodic crunch. While the classic C/A/T sound is still present, overall, this new album tends to sound a touch more refined than previous releases.

Interviews

Mike Morton - Displacer: Mortal Man, or Coronel?
An informative interview with Mike Morton, shining light on the origins of Displacer, his sound gear addiction as well as his penchant for horror movies, pilaging vintage synths from music stores during riots and making music in general.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... er2008.htm

Reviews

Autoclav1.1 - Love No Longer Lives Here
Catharsis junkies, be advised, this is your one-way ticket exiting Purgatory. The music is spacious and panoramic, richly layered and complex, and always reminds its listener of progression and increase and denouement. Unfolding casually, the album soon climbs into a thing nakedly beautiful and kinetic, tangible in its raw intimacy.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _lnllh.htm

Mort Douce - Locust Dreams
Mort Douce creates a very nice combination of drones and ambient, and the high quality of the tracks are a mere indication of why it took him five years to finish this album.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... uce_ld.htm

Moogulator - The Digital Anatomist Project
On first listen, this album may well be a disconcerting experience, especially for those who are not familiar with fractured rhythmic structures, glitch and seemingly random sound compositions. "The Digital Anatomist Project" is not an easy album to get into but it has definite moments of brilliance which could have been further explored.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... or_dap.htm

Babylone Chaos/Lambwool/Le Diktat - Shi
A decent album, not brilliant but with flashes of something fantastic here and there. The amalgamations of these artists together fuse some very interesting pieces indeed, but none quite match the individuality of Lambwool and Le Diktat on their own, which is a shame.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_shi.htm

HIV+/Babylone Chaos - Split
The music isn't what sells this EP - the artwork, the artists' names and, ultimately, the exclusivity of the item unfortunately overshadow the very powerful moods portrayed within the very well constructed sounds delivered by two extremely capable established industrial acts.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_split.htm

Not Half - Radioactive Monster Cats From Planet XLG-5
A pointless C-division album that will get lost in a scene where there is such high quality control amongst its upper echelons.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... rmcfpx.htm

Soman - Mask
All of the songs here shamelessly flaunt the techno blueprint so many have worked from. Each track offers nothing more than simple, mindless Electronic Body Music that will keep your head nodding, whether to the repetitive beats and yawn-worthy synth patterns, or in an effort to keep yourself from falling asleep.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_soman_m.htm

Reviews

Displacer - The Witching Hour
Brace yourself for a hair-raising, ultra-chill experience. Oxymoronic, without doubt, but apt all the same when describing Morton's latest tour de force, "The Witching Hour." Listen to "The Witching Hour" past midnight, if you dare, but keep careful watch on the shadows, and be sure to glance behind once in a while...
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... cer_wh.htm

Fin de Siécle - Nine Barns
This is an engaging release no less of European sounding cinematic music, that is as strange as it gets. Organic instrumentation takes form with the prominent use of violins alongside guitars, female vocals, piano and analogue delay, and adds to the overall raw feel to the release and it's a welcome one at that.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... cle_nb.htm

Bramble - Emergence
"Emergence", if we are to believe the press surrounding this disc is the result of vocal sound manipulations and nothing more. If this truly is the case then this has been done extremely well as the drones and sub-dark ambient sounds could easily have come from more conventional synthesizer sources.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_bramble_e.htm

Nwodtlem - Video πR8
"πR8" is a pretty interesting selection and it is good to see something relatively artistic being made with breakcore, as the genre does tend to be a bit silly and not massively creative - but this has proven to me that breakcore can be artsy and silly all at the same time.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... lem_vp.htm

Xentrifuge - Light Extinguished
"Light Extinguished" has girth, drive, and pure adrenaline that successfully injects a much-needed classic Industrial sound back into the harsh EBM genre. This should appeal to fans of Tactical Sekt and notable fellow newcomers such as Wynardtage and Acylum.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... uge_le.htm

Mathieu Ruhlmann - The Earth Grows In Each Of Us
The theme of regeneration of the life cycle was the main inspiration for this new album, contrasted against the ever present threat of death as his sister narrowly survived a serious road accident. A very pleasant listen at bedtime then, but slightly frustrating to the listener demanding more happenings and variation.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... egieou.htm

Vladislav Buben - Prayers Of Steel - Prologue
A lot of the time when passed a purely experimental CD I grit my teeth. There is a hell of a lot of experimental 'music' out there that I appreciate and a hell of a lot I simply deem as 'artistic masturbation', being very polite. Buben come dangerously close to the latter.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... n_posp.htm

V/A - A Weevil In A Biscuit
Overall though "Weevil in a Biscuit" just leaves you feeling a little disappointed and unsatisfied, regardless of the really great tracks. Here's hoping Bearsuit Records focus on the really great material and get some more releases out by those artists, rather than album length releases that are mostly stuffed with fillers.

http://www.connexionbizarre.net/release ... acome2.htm

Interviews

Thomas P. - Le Diktat
Nourished with references from the spheres of music (industrial, hip-hop, ambient, noise), politics and visual arts, the politically-charged music of French duo Le Diktat is once again in the spotlight with the release of a second album, inspired by the neo-Luddite movement and the life of American terrorist Theodore Kaczinski.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... diktat.htm

Reviews

Mind Necrosis Factor - Morphogenesis
"Morphogenesis" is a technical term used by biologists to describe the set up of a lifeform's structure, the beginning of its arrangement. Through this record, Pierrick Coupé wanted to recreate a similar process to combine lots of various elements into a coherent whole - and did so very succesfully.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ctor_m.htm

V/A - Fabriksampler v2
It is rare to find a compilation like this, one that flows so seamlessly and sounds so organic and coherent, gently but effortlessly grabbing the listener's attention from the beginning without any degree of intrusiveness - effectively going beyond the basic premise of a label sampler.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_fv2.htm

Baxter Lilly - Unsichtbare Flecken
Despite initial misgivings, Baxter Lilly tends to ingratiate itself with repeated listening, eventually becoming a welcome change of pace. Sadly, in today's disposal society, even in the underground fringes thereof, your average consumer may not be willing to devote the required time and effort to the album to discover its finer points.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... lly_uf.htm

[:SITD:] - Bestie:Mensch
Overall, Bestie:Mensch is a very strong Electro record that not only shows purpose and progress for an already fantastic band, but should also lure in many new listeners as word gets out about this album.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_sitd_bm.htm

Accomplice Affair - Jezioro Wspomnien
In summation, Accomplice Affair is the Michael Bolton of dark ambient, the sonic equivalent of British food, like lukewarm softcore porn. Indistinctive grub is better than starving, however, and softcore will do the job on cold winter nights.

Interviews

Pierrick C. - Mind Necrosis Factor
In his second LP, Mind Necrosis factor combines acoustic elements and piercing rhythms, tribal cries and post-industrial atmospheres. More than genesis of a new shape, this album traces the emergence of a mind, from the obscurity of the first moments to the cessation of pain. It invites the listener to look beyond the flesh and to feel the breath of the hidden self.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... factor.htm

Reviews

Disharmony - Cloned - Other Side Of Evolution
With "Cloned - Other Side of Evolution", Disharmony has proven that remix albums can add a whole new lease of life to tracks, and create something entirely different in the process.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _cosoe.htm

15 Degrees Below Zero - New Travel
15 Degrees Below Zero take hold of the territory between droning ambiance and noise and meshes it together quite well and in a very pleasing way, while puting their own unique slant on the styles of music they incorporate.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_15dbz_nt.htm

Matamachete - Tanin No Kao
Matamachete define their music as a mix between punk, drum 'n' bass and industrial. One could easily be lead to believe that Matamachete is just another one of these digital punk, Atari Teenage Riot wanna-be bands which are often described this way. In this case, just listen and you'll quickly find out that you were wrong...
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... te_tnk.htm

Orchestramaxfieldparrish - The Silent Breath of Emptiness
Listening to "The Silent Breath of Emptiness" it is amazing to think that it was recorded live as it was performed and in a single take as music of this type is often carefully orchestrated in a studio using layering techniques and all manner of electronic effects and gadgets.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... h_sboe.htm

Worms Of The Earth - The Angels Of Prostitution
"The Angels of Prostitution" is an expression of what is still left to be explored within electronic music today and an imprint which should leave a notable reverberation within those that are paying attention. If this album is a harbinger of things to come for Worms of the Earth, I'm sticking around to find out what happens next.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... th_aop.htm

Voice_Electronic Duo - VED
Something like experimental pop, wherein jazz elements, electronic loops and curious vocal manipulations stimulate compositions both expansive in their progression and crystalline in their clarity. There are hints of Portishead here, along with facets of Lali Puna, Télépopmusik and Zero 7, though altogether none of these resemblances offer a precise comparison.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... uo_ved.htm

Phallus Über Alles - Les Femmes De La Guerre
Globally, "Les Femmes de la Guerre" is a pretty well-produced EP, but isn't really enough to satisfy those of us who are waiting for a Phallus Über Alles new album since a while. Let me get this straight: this record isn't going to renew the genre, but without a doubt it's gonna kick some ass.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... s_fdlg.htm

V/A - C:\]_THOMAR
It's not a bad compilation if you've got your 80's head on but fancy a modern twist on it, with some interesting twists in direction from Euthymia and Zentex. Not going to grab much attention from those who aren't familiar with the label already, but it's an interesting introduction none the less.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_thomar.htm

Himiko - Himiko
What is most difficult to reconcile about this album is its apparent emptiness, an impoverishment of craft that occurs despite its passionate methodology, DYI punk sensibilities and creative improvisation. "Himiko" challenges only the senses, as it batters them to porridge. But maybe that's the point?

Releases

Various - You Are Here: a Compilation of California Electronics (vol.1)
Free online release showcasing a variety of musical talent from the underground electronic music scene of the US state of California. Compiled by California-based artist Shane Talada alias The Operative. Volume 1 of 2.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/release ... acoce1.htm

Interviews

F.K.L. and Fleur Feijen - Baxter Lilly
Hailing from Brussels, the three protagonists of this electro-industrial carnival aim to take listeners on a noisy trip to a deranged industrial funfair inhabited by psychotic clowns. Thanks to them, the greatest show on Earth has just reached a new level of derangement.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... rlilly.htm

Reviews

Reutoff vs. Troum - Kreuzung Zwei (Creatura Per Creaturam Continetur)
Reutoff is working on a series of collaborations entitled "Kreuzung", and after the first one - where they worked with Antlers Mulm - and before the third one (Reutoff vs. Der Blutharsch), there is this brilliant second one in which Reutoff vs. Troum present "Kreuzung Zwei (Creatura Per Creaturam Continetur)".
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... oum_kz.htm

Andrea Marutti - The Subliminal Relation Between Planets (Live in Archiaro)
A dark but serene journey on waves of low droning sound with cascading chimes, vaguely coherent voices and other miniscule sounds carefully assembled to form a hypnotic sonic bedrock. Often resembling a deep dark ocean bed with an ever present bassy drone, each track holds a certain sub-aquatic charm of tiny chinks of sound, both melodic but strangely distant and unseen.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... i_srbp.htm

Contagious Orgasm & C-drík - Journeys Into Space And Time
Gritty and noisy, this release also has the ability to pummel the listener, which isn't surprising since one half of the act is Contagious Orgasm. C-drík lifts Contagious Orgasm just when needed gives this album a certain ease of listening when it could get a little too loud. An intriguing and intense listen for those who like their music dark and potent with a fair range of depth.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _jisat.htm

C-drík/Aluviana - Moje Čelo
With statements that both artists have done this with a fair share of humour one may wonder if this duo is completely stark raving bonkers. Either way, funny side or not, this is professionally done and a sure-fire winner for fans of proper old industrial and dark ambient purists. A fine, disturbing listen from start to finish.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ana_mc.htm

V/A - Hyperakusis
A neat little compilation, though not one that's going to set the world alight, and nor is it one for the casual listener. If you are into odd electronics, the organic sound of ambience and approach sound with an extremely alternative ear this is one for you.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... akusis.htm

Laurent Perrier - As Far As
Saying Perrier writes obscure music is an understatement. It's a risky business producing what he has here, and more credit to him for trying. "As Far As" is by no means brilliant, dangerously teetering on overstating itself, but it's also a decent release if you are after an extremely strange album.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... er_afa.htm

Life Towards Twilight - An Eclipse
Life Toward Twilight are a surprise in that it's most likely the first time anyone heard an ambient act from Detroit (these things are usually confined to the darkest depths of Europe, which has the upper hand generally in these circles). Fair to say though Life Toward Twilight play a strong hand and hold up fairly well in the grand scheme of things from the start.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ght_ae.htm

Niko Skorpio - Half Born In Half Light
There are certain stages of this CD where a genuine atmosphere is created, giving space to the drones and atmospherics, carried by the reverberation of the odd tribal beat followed by simply crushing guitar sounds. When it's done well it's fantastic, but that is simply too few and far between.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _hbihl.htm

RachMiel - Vortex Engine
It is obvious that RachMiel is a technically competent and well-versed experimental composer and sound designer. A good amount of thought and arrangement has gone into the pieces on "Vortex Engine," however the reward for its audience is dubious.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... iel_ve.htm

tBH - Book of Salms
It's not often that the cover artwork of an album matches the music quite as well as in the case of tBH's "Book of Salms". The desolate loneliness in the grainy, sepia-toned empty landscapes mirrors exactly the musical entropy enclosed within these five deep, meandering journeys through musical melancholia.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_tbh_bos.htm

Brand New Day - Style
One can't really t help but think that even synthpop aficionados will turn up their noses at this one.

Interviews

Nik Bender - Ten Data Keshin
Three years after "Tex*s Instrument", Ten Data Keshin comes back with a new album, "Neo Neon Generation". This is an album inspired by comics, manga, science-fiction, video games and some chaos riot involved books through which Ten Data Keshin delivers a warm massive groovy metallic mix between different styles, from melancolic electronica to industrial hip-hop, break-beat and cyber-punk.

Reviews

Le Diktat - Unabomber
Le Diktat are fresh, they are here and once heard it's blatantly obvious that this is an injection this diseased riddled industry needs right now. I never give a ten out of ten, but this was so close it was sorely tempting. Utterly the most essential album I have heard in ages and cooler than an Eskimo's nadsack.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ktat_u.htm"]Read more

Modul - Lo-Middle Lack
"Lo-Middle Lack", has certain immediacy. Glitch and subtle IDM references came to the front straight away and stopped the listener in his tracks. A wonderful, joyously beautiful, happy release, that is like a breath of fresh air.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_modul_lml.htm"]Read more

Ashley Reaks - Melancholia
It is difficult, if not impossible, to term this recording as electronica of any sort. Rather, it is more of an exercise in 90's-style Indie rock, in the vein of The Pixies or Nick Cave, with overtones of David Bowie and Gary Numan, performed with the aid of electronic instrumentation.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... eaks_m.htm"]Read more

Bartek Kujawski - Murlull Movies
"Murlull Movies" is serious, considered music and should be approached as such. At first it may come across as any other experimental electronica - but subsequent listening reveals a depth that many other artists fail to achieve. It's clever, fairly unique in its symphonic methodology, and worth the effort.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ski_mm.htm"]Read more

Pigface - 17 Ways To Suck
It can get a little wearing listening to the same song, regardless of the strengths of the remixes, but if you like remix albums, Pigface, or indeed, Nine Inch Nails, you'll get something out of this. An interesting release, to say the least.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _17wts.htm"]Read more

Gelsomina + No Xivic - Furnace
Interesting and disappointing in equal amounts this is a mixed bag of a release that thankfully is saved with the opening and last tracks.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ivic_f.htm"]Read more

Cardopusher - Mutant Dubstep Vol.2
In the end, "Mutant Dubstep Vol.2" provides the listener with a short and somewhat formulaic experience, even if is not without its charms, but which probably will not have much appeal to people beyond a universe of dubstep DJs and enthusiasts.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... r_mdv2.htm"]Read more

Nedicry - Sincere Wounds
There simply is far too much in this genre that is fantastic and exciting to warrant me putting "Sincere Wounds" on in place of - which is a pity when you take into account the rather enjoyable second track. Maybe they should take note of that number and follow the path, which could surely bring about great things.

Matt Rosen - Liar's Rosebush
A nice chat with the vagrant/diva Liar's Rosebush, totally or partly responsible for the authorship such acclaimed releases as "Circle The Squares", "Nonsense" and "Collect:Erase".

Reviews

The [Law-Rah] Collective - Inspiration
A new chapter begins in the history of this prolific Dutch ambient artist's library. "Inspiration" is a gorgeous piece of work and, for some, may score highly as one of their favourite ambient albums of all time.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... tive_i.htm

Portion Control - Slug
"Slug" is fun. It's energetic, it's engaging and slaps you across the face just when you think you have been given a reprieve. It's not a bludgeoning album, rather it's a taunting and threatening release that slowly grinds you down until you simply have to submit.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... trol_s.htm

Bulldose - Overdose EP
Not at all suited for a dance floor, unless you consider writhing on the floor in a Thorazine-induced seizure dancing, none the less, "Overdose" keeps your head nodding. Undoubtedly though, Bulldose will manage to captivate not only the enthusiast listener but the adventurous newcomer to electronic music.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... se_oep.htm

Refuse To Die - Collection Of Agnostic Flies
Despite its nature as a collage album and a couple of more pieces that the average listener may find more difficult or abrasive to get into, the interesting "Collection Of Agnistic Flies" is rather easy to get into and quite rewarding as well. Broad-minded listeners with a taste for a whimsical (though befittingly dark) humour in their music will find this right up their alley.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... e_coaf.htm

genCAB - II transMuter
genCAB can be seen as a new evolution within the saturated, uninspired EBM-electro-industrial genres. Even though the initial impact genCAB has on a listener may not be massive, it is a lasting one that crawls beneath the skin and lodges itself there. While "II tranMuter" is not the best album in recent times, it is definitely brimming with potential, making genCAB a definite artist to watch.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ab_iit.htm

Panic Lift - Witness to Our Collapse
Panic Lift will appeal mostly to fans of the like of Psyclon Nine, Tactical Sekt, Aslan Faction, Agonoize and possibly even newer Suicide Commando; more traditional EBM enthusiasts will find very little on "Witness to Our Collapse" to recommend it. A great club album, without a doubt, where almost every track could be envisioned as a single, but it still comes across as modern goth-pop.

Connexion Bizarre was updated on December 15th. Unsurprisingly, with the coming of the festive season, this is a rather slow week with only a couple of new reviews, webcasts and a few recommended links (kudos to PS of http://enoughrecords.scene.org/ - Enough Records for this week's tips). A quick overview of this week's updates:

Webcast: "Murderstep" with music selection by DJ Istabmyhead and "Counting down to..." with music selection by M.
Reviews: Manufactura "Psychogenic Fugue", Uberbyte "Sic"

Manufactura - Psychogenic Fugue + A Damaged Symphony for Depraved Dementia N.2
This double release from Manufactura is a manifestation of the maturity and development that his sound has undergone. While all the former elements of earlier releases are present (and literally so), this release has a more refined sound and much higher production quality.

Uberbyte - Sic
At the end of the day, this is a party album - a fun mix of beats, bass, and yelling. You might enjoy it a few times at the club, you might enjoy it while weightlifting, or you might enjoy it while you're drunk as hell at 4 a.m. and trying to get evicted from your apartment by playing music as loud as possible.

Reviews

Artridge - Butterfly Wing Theory - Part 1 (Think Tank)
Subtitled "Think Tank", "Butterfly Theory Part 1" is a wonderfully experimental affair that toys around with varying degrees of elements from natural sound sources to full instruments to programming, more often than not all in the space of one track.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ge_bt1.htm

Pylône - Grounded Hands
A towering work of alien unease, Laurent Perrier's second release as Pylône offers deeply hypnotic realms. "Grounded Hands" even improves on "Black Grains" (2006), though comparable in format: five extensive tracks probing the limits of esoteric, futuristic dark ambient.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_pylone_gh.htm

Metaorganism - I:Baphomet
"I:Baphomet" toys with machine like ambience, not too dissimilar to a creaking great iron bridge that is bowing in the wind and ready to crash into the sea. It's an effective use of sound for at least the first three tracks (which take up nearly the first half of the album).
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ism_ib.htm

V/A - Antibothis - Occultural Anthology 1
This is essentially a collection of ambient works, some ranging from the Thisco stable with spoken word coming by way of Jarboe and Kenji Siratori amongst others. The narration is taken from book anthologies and interviews relating to many an ideology.
