Reviews

Image
Andrew Duke - From The Deep End
Duke's music is generally meditative, to be absorbed and digested, deciphered and interpreted as you wish. There is undoubtedly a personal message, mood or feeling for Duke himself, but the music feels so intensely personal and carefully assembled that it deserves the listener's full concentration and attention.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... e_ftde.htm

Image
Kenji Siratori - Melancholic Lobotomy
Although Kenji seems to specialize in spoken word, he is more than competent enough to step up to the music plate as well as shown by this short release, which has a good enough balance of dark atmospherics and noise to keep one interested.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ori_ml.htm

Image
Cría Cuervos - Vor Feuerschlünden
Recorded entirely without synthesizers, this experimental electro-acoustic album consists of field recordings, self-programmed theta waves, shortwaves and software-generated sounds. If drone and electronic experimentation are your favoured genres, "Vor Feuerschlünden" is worth a closer look.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... vos_vf.htm

Image
I, Synthesist - Art Of Survival
It would seem that Chris Ianuzzi sought to supplement his signature dry and minimalist sound with explicit club-friendly beats, an approach whose efficacy can be questioned, even more so in the context of a full-length album.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... st_aos.htm

Image
Missouri - Run With the People and Hunt With the Hare
Even if the themes expressed on "Run With the People and Hunt With the Hare" aren't exactly musically progressive or culturally critical, they at least provide enough classic groove in a straightforward, egalitarian manner to keep the party rolling.

Manufactura - In the Company of Wolves
It would seem that Chris Ianuzzi sought to supplement his signature dry and minimalist sound with explicit club-friendly beats, an approach whose efficacy can be questioned, even more so in the context of a full-length album.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _itcow.htm

Image
Andrew Chalk - Time Of Hayfield
The biggest departure from Chalk's previous solo material on "Time of Hayfield" is the fact that instead of the album just consisting of a few long songs, we have individually titled tracks, the longest being in the 14-minute range and the shortest not breaking the five-minute mark.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... lk_toh.htm

Image
Bitter:Sweet - The Remix Game
Those of us that believed the trip-hop genre had nearly ceased to exist will find this release a bittersweet reminder of that all but bygone era. This is not to say the artists are simply recycling the sounds of the early 1990s.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... et_trg.htm

Image
Indu Mezu - Chdetoria
Whether you term Indu Mezu industrial, experimental, glitch or ambient, you'll be somewhat off the mark: on "Chdetoria," labels are transcended and what is left is something more akin to an autobiographical soundtrack, constantly changing and evolving, as does the listener.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... mezu_c.htm

Image
Objekt4 - Shades Of Night
Skilfully composed using essentially processed field recordings and the odd instrumental element (a guitar chord here, a bell there), "Shades Of Night" comes across as the dark side of a meditation tape or, perhaps, even as an aural opiate.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... t4_son.htm

Image
Dimension Zero - Scythe
While the CD would most likely appeal to a fan of electronic rock, it's time to call a spade a spade and admit that if you're looking for your standard EBM fare, "Scythe" probably isn't going to suit your tastes.

"Mothfly" is a strong comeback for this talented German band and should be well received by industrial music lovers who decide to give it a chance.

Joe Colley - Hive
A concept piece built around field recordings of bees in and outside their hive. While the 'beehive' concept could have been elaborated and expanded upon much further, "Hive" is still a solid release that will appeal to fans of drone and experimental ambient.

Moljebka Pvlse/Seventeen Migs Of Spring - Ravha/Electricity Gardens
Throughout our everyday existence there is a constant aural stream flowing in from our environment. While most people can easily discard these bits of disassociated memory, the artists behind Moljebka Pvlse and Seventeen Migs of Spring utilize these relics to form a lucid dream of disconnected familiarity.

Image
Cyanhide - Dancefloor
Anachronism aside, the album is well worth listening to, with a wide appeal that spans aging goths as well as fans of layered dark electro like early Velvet Acid Christ or In Strict Confidence.

Image
Vas0k - Vas0k
Vasøk claims influences from electronica and hip-hop to Russian protest songs and Norwegian black metal but don't think too hard about any but the first on that list. Ultimately, the impression of "Vasøk" becomes one of too much time spent on self-indulgence and not enough on coherent content.

Stpocold - What Happened Outside
Whether you're expecting pure sublime noise, harsh ambient or even a tribute to electronic legends, there's something here for everyone with a taste for a roughly distorted mirror to society. It's loud, misanthropic and likely to offend somebody.

Mirko Uhlig / Dronæment - Farewell Fields
An hour's worth of minimal drone-influenced ambience, showcasing the talent of two emerging names of a new generation of sound artists.

Aa1 - Live At Electroline
"Live at Electroline" is a weird and wonderful journey that is certainly worth taking for those who appreciate sound composition outside the realm of typical auditory comprehension.

Thermostatic - Joy-Toy (2007)
It can be just what the doctor ordered to lift jaded folks out of seasonal depression, with playfully addictive repertoire of Nintendo love songs. Or it could simply annoy the Jesus Christ out of you. In either case, you won't be quick to forget it.

The Chaos Industry - Karoshi
All in all, a clumsily constructed recording, deficient in power, emotion or excitement. Kudos to The Chaos Industry for attempting to bring the live music element into a predominantly virtual genre, but I feel far more growth is still needed.

Dino Felipe - Dino Felipe Is Sleeping
Is there a method to all this madness? Only Dino knows, so don't bother attempting to decipher this outlandish hodgepodge of misfit electronic doodling. It's not supposed to make sense; just sit back and take it all in - you'll sleep better that way.

Reviews

Image
Dekad - Confidential Tears
A strong album with a stylistically varied range of tracks, consistent songwriting and smooth vocal delivery. Everything comes together nicely with Dekad presenting their own brand of modern electro-industrial music that mixes classic elements with their own ideas to keep things original and interesting.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_dekad_ct.htm

Image
Sam & Valley - Stupid Love or Smart Laugh
As a compilation of unreleased material, this limited edition proves to be a very good introduction to the varied musical world of Sam & Valley and will certainly appeal to old fans as well. Though disconcerting at first, it is an engaging recording to be approached with tongue firmly in cheek.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _slosl.htm

Image
Celluloide - Naphtaline LP
On the face of it, the "Naphtaline LP" is a collection of fairly simplistic electro-pop cover tunes but look beyond the initial pop sensibilities and you'll find some excellent reinterpretations of tracks from some heavyweights on the dark music scene. Cover albums often don't work too well but Celluloide do something interesting to pay tribute to the bands that have influenced them.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... de_nlp.htm

Image
Hyperbubble - Airbrushed Alibis
Hyperbubble's sonic approach is what really brings back the fun in electronic music. "Airbrushed Alibis" is one of those albums that can pretty much make your day if you give it a chance. You can take it seriously or pretty much just drop your music defenses down for a while and just enjoy it for what it is.

Reviews

Punch Inc. - Fight Club
The only real requirement when listening to Punch Inc. is a simple one: volume, and lots of it. Crank those speakers as far as they can go and, if possible, do so within an enclosed space. The resulting reverberations and noise cross-contamination interferences that build up are spectacular: truly the only way to fully appreciate this recording.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... inc_fc.htm

Image
Yuki Tendo - Saturnine
Crystal clear, yet terrifyingly complex beats coupled with mechanised atmospherics. Haunting sound effects echoing over repetitive melodies. Exciting, sensitively structured sequencing that builds beautifully before floating back down to the grim inter-track silence.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... endo_s.htm

Image
Emmon - The Art & The Evil
If you like your electro poppy, upbeat and catchy, Emmon is the thing for you. Not really retro but more an updating and reinterpretation of the classic electro and synthpop sound. All the hooks and coolness are intact but redefined for a new generation.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _taate.htm

Interviews

Image
Eric Oehler - Null Device
Started well over a decade ago by Oehler and college friend/main lyricist Eric Goedken, Null Device has gone from a slightly askew synthpop/EBM hybrid and evolved to a completely askew creative endeavor that combines so many styles of music and lyrical invention whose musis is, to say the least, exhilarating.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... device.htm

Image
Mirko Hentrich and Carsten Stiller - Audiophob
"Serving you with best industrial-ambient music since 2004." is the motto of this small experimental music label founded by Mirko Hentrich (of Spherical Disrupted) and Carsten Stiller (of Alarmen). For four years they have worked to do just that, both as a 'conventional' record label as well as, more recently, a netlabel.

Reviews

Image
V/A - Konkrete
In summation: an intellectual collection of some inspirational mood music, well worth listening to, that suggests a promising future for Spectraliquid.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_k.htm

Image
Memmaker - How To Enlist In A Robot Uprising
On first listen this album packs more punch than Mike Tyson in top shape and scores in awesomeness in a level comparable to the Transformers. Despite the danger of the novelty eventually wearing off, it is an excellent debut release and the swift kick in the pants that the electro-industrial scenes are in dire need of.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... teiaru.htm

Image
Toy Bizarre - kdi dctb 039
After all is said and done though, this really is a pretty unique release. Toy Bizarre definitely does have his own sound in this field and I'd be more than willing to check out further releases of his.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... re_kd0.htm

Image
Instant Movie Combinations - Shipyard
Admitted, the sounds could have been a bit more interesting at times - a bit more varied modulations, additional layers, etc - but, for the well trained ear there is sonic pleasure at the shipyard.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ions_s.htm

Image
igOr OGOGO - Solo View
This is art for art's sake in a lot of respects and there was a danger that I would start skipping tracks in desperate fashion, trying to eek out some life amongst the depths of this disc. I felt emotionless and numb, and it was all a little too much for me.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ogo_sv.htm

Image
Windimoto - The Travels Of Windimoto
While "The Travels Of Windomoto" isn't particularly well-achieved, there may be potential for vast improvement in their brand of house music by addressing the major flaws that can be spotted a mile away and perhaps adding some variety by incorporating elements from other music genres.

Reviews

Image
Cloama + Blutleuchte - From Wasteland Mausoleums
Behind many of Howard Phillips Lovecraft's works lies a hidden terror, an incomprehensible force that if beheld in material form often led to madness. The foreboding sound of "From Wasteland Mausoleums" is reminiscent of such strange stories.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... te_fwm.htm

Image
Pixelh8 - The Boy With The Digital Heart
You can't get more retro than this if you're into this kind of stuff. And like popping up your favourite cartridge in your favourite 80's system, this will - strangely - bring you back all those memories that only those wonderful devices can usually replenish.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... tbwtdh.htm

Image
Suicide Booth - Aura EP
Despite the obvious influences and similarities to many 80's genres, "Aura" has a sort of intemporality to it which would probably make it a great record had it been released anywhere between the 1960's and the 2030's, and maybe even beyond.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... th_aep.htm

Image
Universal Poplab - Uprising
'Gay Synthpop', in the third, non-homophobic sense of the word, is an acquired taste, especially amongst those who enjoy harder electronic music. Universal Poplab, as their name suggests, have broad appeal and should be heading straight for the pop charts. If only synthpop was in fashion again!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... plab_u.htm

Image
Tor Lundvall - The Seasons Unfold (sampler)
The music is soft and delicate, pleasant while occasionally suggesting a little darkness, especially on the closing track "November's Fields". Gentle melodies flow calmly into the listener's conscience and spacious instrumental arrangements provide soothing release.

Reviews

Null Device - Excursions
You know it when you find something that can't be easily categorized and yet it does fit the title with such perfection that only the album itself can rival with... This is one of those cases and it does make it as an interesting experience indeed.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... vice_e.htm

Totakeke - eLekatota: The Other Side Of The Tracks
"eLekatota" is one of those albums that demands (and deserves) the listener's undivided time and attention to be fully appreciated. An excellent listening choice for those occasions in which one finds time to not do anything else but sit down, relax, appreciate a very good record and forget about life's worries.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... tosott.htm

ESA - How Pure Would Your Utopia Be?
The sophomore release of British musician Jamie Blacker's solo project, ESA (Electronic Substance Abuse), shows that the positive critical reactions his debut offering were quite deserved and that the artist was still capable of improving the quality and creativity of his work.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... hpwyub.htm

Algol - Deep Thoughts About Universe9
The tracklisting on Algol's "Deep thoughts about universe" reads like something approaching the catalogue of a surrealist art collection (exemplified by "Aware of universe's inevitable collapse" and "The conversation of space to time") but the lofty pretensions to high art end there, thankfully.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... l_dtau.htm

Parade Ground - Rosary
"Rosary" won't certainly bring Parade Ground into the forefront of industrial music, but it's worth a few spins especially if you miss the sounds and experiments of the 80's. If you don't, it is possible that you will get tired after some minutes into the record, since this is certainly not easy-listening stuff.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ound_r.htm

Media

Various - Mothers Against Noise vol.1
Re-release of the "Mothers Against Noise vol.1" noise and experimental sound-art compilation. Originally released in 2005 as part of the Mothers Against Noise (dot) Org temporary web phenomenon.

Reviews

Image
V/A - Emerging Organisms
A veritable pile of unadulterated dark electronic psychoses and shining atmospheres, the addictive mood kindled by volume one of the Hidden Forms compilation series establishes a precedent that will prove difficult for later installments to match.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_eo.htm

Image
Abominations Of Yondo - Abominations Of Yondo
erhaps this sort of dark ambiental soundtrack is not adequate for everyone but admirers of Clark Ashton Smith, H. P. Lovecraft and similar writers will find this an essential release for their collections. Others should also check it out, if not because this album is also available as a free downloadable release.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... do_aoy.htm

Image
Igorrr - Moisissure
Summarily, it is unlikely that "Moisissure" will garner any commercial accolades for Igorrr; a pity, as anything this original and fresh (there really is nothing even vaguely similar available anywhere) as this selection of eleven pieces of brilliant lunacy deserves great praise.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_igorrr_m.htm

Image
Thermidor - 1929
Although no one track appears to have a specific theme as such, each one has a story of its own that is told in colourful detail by J.'s twisting, turning and mutating style. "1929" is a multi-faceted album of hidden depth that leaves plenty to discover on future listens.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... r_1929.htm

Image
V/A - Muzyka Voln
The Russian label Zhelezobeton decided it was time to create a new sub-label. It is unknown what the speciality for this label will be, but its first release is an ambient/drone sampler presenting 12 Russian composers doing their thing. And what mighty fine things they are...
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_mv.htm

Image
Robert Piotrowicz - Lasting Clinamen
For an average listener there might be a bit too much repetition. For sound freaks on the other hand, there is quite a lot to discover. Definitly worth it for the "freaks", though if you're looking for some easy listening ambience... Don't even think about getting this one.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... icz_lc.htm

Image
Somatic Responses - Digital Darkness
While known for their selected brand of stabbing, dark IDM and furious drum 'n bass collages, Somatic Responses take their formula one step backwards this time by adding a variety of squelching 303-style acid tweaking and marginal vocal samples to their recipe.

Junkie XL - Booming Back At You
Holistically, a bizarre blend of psychedelia, 80's kitsch and sexual overtones, "Booming Back at You" is raw, raunchy, light-hearted and thoroughly enjoyable stuff. Shallower than a roadside puddle, slicker than greasepaint and sleazier than sin itself, this is what Techno Body Music should embody, and what Junkie XL has managed to do - in spades.

Image
Quench - Fanion
"Fanion", the latest result of this musical approach by the Funcken brothers, is a collection of four complex, but definitely still quite laidback, compositions with each track being an example of skilful and precise composition with great attention to detail. Aptly titled "Fanion" feels like a marker in a sonic exploration in progress which, if pursued, may well be quite interesting.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_quench_f.htm

Image
Autoclav1.1 - Broken Beats For Broken Hearts
The track listing on the album has each track described as "broken" rather than "remixed", a nice touch, but it's lucky of course that most of the artists here managed to repair the damage they inflicted on Autoclav1.1 and return with something worthwhile in its own right.

Image
Life's Decay - Szilentia
Life's Decay have certainly got the potential to become a major force within this still small scene of military pop, but as the singer is the focal point of any pop group this one really is holding them back.

Image
Banister - This Is Not About Noise
This collection of recordings suffers from poor sound choices and questionable mixing. The percussion is stale. While it's not the worst thing I ever heard, it certainly falls into the realm of the bland and quickly forgettable.

Kilowatts and Vanek - Focus & Flow
While the blatant accessibility of Vanek's vocals may turn off some listeners who necessitate more grit to their music, those who find solace in warm electronica along the lines of Postal Service, Styrofoam, or even Apparat will certainly feel right at home with "Focus & Flow."
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... nek_ff.htm

Image
Liar's Rosebush - Circle The Squares
Trying to label Rosen's music is pointless. It certainly falls at the hard electronic or breakcore end of things but beyond that it also shows some originality. His method of combining styles is impressive, never letting any given track become in any way repetitive.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... sh_cts.htm

Image
Spherical Disrupted - Barriere
The fact that "Barriere" is essentially an EP consisting of one long new track, together with ten remixes, would otherwise suggest the low productivity to be excessive, but such is the quality of artists lined up here that this minor complaint is soon forgotten.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... pted_b.htm

Image
Indu Mezu - Opus
Indu Mezu's "Opus" offers a different take on electronic music, dispensing with computers and soft synths to get back to using old experimental techniques and simpler, but still skilful, sound creation and manipulation.

Tzolk'in - Haab'
Like an epiphytic outgrowth from formalistic cues, Tzolk'in achieves musical, technical and spiritual success without sacrificing its critical artistic engagement with apocalyptic motifs. Expect music both thrumming and viscid, bathed in swathes of chimeric color and decorated with refined and subtle gestures; prepare to be immersed and transported.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... k-in_h.htm

Image
V/A - My Life In An Insulation Test
An interesting showcase of talent, bound to be broaden one's musical horizons, and presenting the work of artists from relatively 'exotic' locations, this release also hints at a progressive globalization of music styles and a blurring of cultural tendencies and idiosynchrasies.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_mliait.htm

Image
Destroid - Loudspeaker
"Loudspeaker" would have made perfect sense if it had preceded "Future Prophecies." The fluid progression of change would be clear and sensible. Instead this sophomore effort is such a departure that it feels somewhat predictable and dispassionate by comparison.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... roid_l.htm

Image
Nazi Bastards From Aldebaran - Invasion
Very similar to dark electro releases in the same vein (for example, Velvet Acid Christ's "Calling Ov the Dead") - almost trancey in the rhythmic section, heavily laden with trademark dark and mysterious samples, and all linked together with grumbling atmospheric pad work. Old, analog, not very well produced, and unlikely to make a lasting impression on anyone but older fans of the genre.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... aran_i.htm

Image
Combichrist - What The F**ck Is Wrong With You People?
"WTFIWWYP"'s best tracks are comparable to some of the worst material on previous offerings. This is a release which was intended to capitalize on the act's meteoric rise to fame, but instead feels rushed and lazy.

Reviews

Image
M-Pex - Phado
"Phado" is wholly Iberian in atmosphere, sensual and melodic with more than a tinge of nostalgic melancholy, evoking an ambience at once tangy and honey-dipped. These are the songs to compliment sentimental and lonely moods, when distance or time renders someone held dear intangible and missed.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_mpex_p.htm

Image
Subheim - Approach
On the whole, "Approach" is a rather melancholic and atmospheric body of work which some may consider it as lacking variety in composition and emotion. While these are valid criticism, "Approach" is undoubtedly solid, showing great talent and skilled musicianship as well as great future promise for Subheim's growth as an artist.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_subheim_a.htm

Image
Bardoseneticcube & Noises Of Russia - New Orthodox Line
The sheer lack of originality is surprising given the artists involved. At turns it seems to be trying to alienate its audience with ear piercing feedback, then to draw the listener in with much repeated choral motifs, but the balance is uneven and the overall product ill-arranged and unfocused.

Reviews

Image
Xabec - Feuerstern
This release doesn't need any words to be advertised towards admirers of Xabec; they will already own the box. People still in doubt about whether to obtain a copy shouldn't wait too long. I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes be a (well deserved) bestseller.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_xabec_f.htm

Image
Moljebka Pvlse - Lode Lvx
Most of the time Drone records from Germany - run by the master of drones, Stefan Knappe of Troum - invests in lesser known names or artists who haven't had many releases thus far. So it was a big surprise to see the name Moljebka Pvlse in Drone Records' latest list of releases.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... lse_ll.htm

Image
Noise Dreams Machina - In / Out
The noisiest of a recent batch of releases by Drone Records is something of a new name, one Oscar Martin under the moniker Noise Dreams Machina - a name that fits perfectly in the Dream Machines theme from Drone Records.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ina_io.htm

Image
Shrine - Distorted Legends, Pt.1
Music-wise there is a lot to be discovered here. Nice mellow ambient layers form the basis on which static analog sounds create a feeling of loneliness. On the reverse side, some added bass sounds create an emotion that can only be described by the word mesmerizing...
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ne_dl1.htm

Image
Edward Ruchalski - Territorial Objects
This album is recommended to anyone who considers themselves fans of older Organum or Nurse With Wound material. If you are into drone and experimental music at all, you would probably be quite content with this album as well.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ski_to.htm

Image
Wasteful Consumption Patterns - Solder
Although it feels like you've heard everything the album has to offer after only three songs, it is still a memorable selection of music that blurs the lines between breakbeat, digital hardcore, drum'n'bass and industrial.

Interviews

Image
Br0d, the MAB & Blimpcaptain - Boole (part 1)
Boole are many things to many people, but mostly unheard from the last half a decade until the release of "The Vital Few" this year. What transpired from a conversation with the band is as weird and varied as Boole's music is. Read and be educated, entertained, and most likely mildly confused. They would have it no other way.

Oleg Semenovykh - Dars Records
An independent expanding Russian label dedicated to the new intelligent music (post-IDM and new intelligent electronica, glitch, abstract, ambient, electroacoustic music) and other "pushing boundaries" styles.

Reviews

Image
Troum - Darvê sh/Ajin
Jaroslaw Szeliga from the Polish label Nefryt probably offered Stefan Knappe from Troum to re-release two older vinyl releases on one CD, and from the full discography from Troum it's doubtful if any other two releases would fit a CD this well.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_troum_dsa.htm

Image
Sunao Inami - LaidBack Computing
Somewhat ceremonial in some points, and never quite organic, the compositions are ostensibly relaxing or relaxed, making its title a rather adequate one. "LaidBack Computing" is as good as one would expect from an artist like Sunao Inami, sure to please his fans and appeal to appreciators of abstract electronic music.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... mi_lbc.htm

Image
Francisco López - Live In Auckland
A worthwhile piece of sound art for the initiated, but perhaps a little too challenging/pretentious for the newcomer.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ez_lia.htm

Image
V/A - Hyperreality
It is no surprise that a lot of what's on offer here is similar, as it is after all a label sampler rather than a stand-alone compilation, and unfortunately some less than inspired tracks do tend to blur at the borders while other genuinely good (if a little generic) offerings are overshadowed by their placement alongside superior artists.

Reviews

Image
Ferial Confine - First, Second And Third Drop
When all is said and done, "First, Second and Third Drop" does nothing to disappoint. In fact, I feel it offers almost a "missing link" between Mr. Chalk's earlier noise work and the shimmering ambient tones he's known for today.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _fsatd.htm

Image
Hypnoskull / Caustic / Coreline / The PCP Principle - Savage Lands
In general, nothing about "Savage Lands" is particularly brilliant. There are a few highlights that club DJs will appreciate, but overall it's a mediocre presentation that doesn't do adequate justice to the artists it is meant to promote.

Muckrackers - [Uckange_4]
While some may find it too intense or abrasive, "[Uckange_4]" will certainly hold a definite appeal for others (particularly if their musical roots are in the field of punk or grind-metal) and, if historically and socially motivated intense in-your-face music is your cup of tea, then it is surely a must-have.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ers_u4.htm

Image
Oxyd - Larva
Oxyd presents the listener with something of an audio conundrum: modern electronic music that places more emphasis on the musical element than the electronic. It is a rare thing in these days of bedroom producers, but most definitely welcome.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_oxyd_l.htm

Image
Ahnst Anders - Dialog
Ahnst Anders is yet another mysterious project from the German label Pflichtkauf. The debut album, entitled "Dialog," presents ten tracks ranging from epic soundscapes and engaging, subtle complexity to pointless randomness and dull repetition.

Disharmony come from Slovakia, probably one of the former Eastern Bloc's more well developed nations as far as musical exports go, and can easily stand up to comparison with some of the German or American leaders of the electro-industrial scene.

Samhain - Violent Identity
By no means a bad album, just one suffering from a bit of an identity crisis. It falls neatly into a category I personally term "soundtrack ambience" - music typified by sweeping atmospherics, intended to emotionally charge the listener, but only just failing to do so without the intended accompanying visuals.

Interviews

Image
Paul "Synctank" Nielsen - Tympanik Audio
Founded by one of founders of the Hidden Forms radio show, Tympanik Audio is, so to speak, the 'new kid on the block' of the underground electronic music scenes. Though recently founded (Autumn 2007), this American label has already gathered a remarkable pool of international talent in its roster and shows no sign of slowing down its activity.

Reviews

Image
Return To Mono - Involution
Although only seven tracks, "Involution" is commendable in how well it is balanced, with every piece suited to its pacing and position. Sounds on the release are lucid and intelligible, and each distinct element is harmonious with its peers in volume and definition; it is evident Sybilrud's studio inspirations have translated well into a promising trip-hop/electro-lounge formula.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... mono_i.htm

Image
Tyske Ludder - SCIENTific technOLOGY
With the cult that is the result of a science fiction writer's flirtation with Crowleyan ritual magick being a hot news topic, thanks in no small part to its popularity amongst Hollywood A-listers, "SCIENTific technOLOGY" is right on the pulse of what makes people tick - especially when aimed at people whose alternative lifestyle choices make them more open to debate regarding matters theosophical.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... der_st.htm

Image
Nostalgia - Infestation
Mr. Hunter's work is really well done for someone in his field, though his take on the so-called 'dark ambient' path isn't completely original. He's good at what he does and "Infestation" is definitely something one would pop when m in a brooding mood.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... lgia_i.htm

Image
Blank - Impact Zone
While there isn't anything especially pioneering or intriguing which forges a particular connection between the tracks and listener, the release will probably do the trick for those looking for something a bit more up tempo and danceable.

Reviews

Image
Blackfilm - Blackfilm
This stuff simply defines cinematic. Its orchestral nuances and muffled piano, spectral voices and effective interlude transitions, among other elements, serve to elucidate this formative strategy. As the second release for young label Spectraliquid (based in Athens, Greece), "Blackfilm" reflects a promising musical direction and, more significantly, astute artist selectivity.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... film_b.htm

Image
Non Ethos - Syk Asfalt
"Syk Asfalt" contains the intimateness of your own thoughts, interspersed with insidious looped segments of uncertain origin and at times deeply unsettling effects. It is that rare thing: an album that grabs your attention from the first and keeps a slowly tightening grip right through to the end. Bleak, bitter, cold - and brilliant.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... hos_sa.htm

Image
Plastic Violence - A Mouthful of Dust (A Soundtrack for the Desertic Soundscapes - Vol. 1)
"A Mouthful of Dust" manages to maintain an overall unhurriedness or patience about it, from death-march-tempo cadences to ambient crackling and molasses-infused psychedelics. The desert is expansive indeed.

Reviews

Image
Feu Follet - FogbankFor its tenth release Triple Bath asked Tobias Fisher - known for his activities for the highly praised Tokafi webzine, as well as his labels Einzeleinheit and Ex Ovo - for a release. Under the name Feu Follet, Fisher creates massive ambient soundscapes built from drones, field recordings, loops and additional instruments.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... llet_f.htm

Image
Oxygenfad - OxygenfadListening to Oxygenfad's self-titled CD is like channel surfing at high speed with the picture off. There really is something for (almost) everyone here. You never know what you're going to get next, and while in lesser hands the quick change from one genre to another (sometimes mid-track) could wear thin pretty quickly, Oxygenfad's assured handling of the material shines through.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... nfad_o.htm

Image
Autopsia - The Berlin RequiemAutopsia have an impressive history of making singular, inspired music that spans genres. In fact, the only common thread binding their massive discography together is the pervading sense of impending doom that typifies this Czech outfit. "The Berlin Requiem" is therefore no surprise in terms of subject matter and atmospheric content.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ia_tbr.htm

Image
Disharmony - XframesAlthough cinematic in nature, "XFrames" is essentially downtempo EBM with ritual ambient influences. Often individual tracks are more iterative than suits the styling, however there is suitable variation between tracks to avoid redundancy.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... mony_x.htm

Image
Numbers On The Mast - Numbers On The MastThematically occultist in nature, the debut by this Austin-based trio is a curious affair. As usual, the armoury is stocked with a variety of synths and a plethora of lord-knows-what mixed into the pot to create a stream of eclectic and ominous absorbing drones teetering along with flashes of organic sounds that seem to be the standard within this genre.
