INTERVIEWS

Image
Dancon1 - disco_r.dance
Disco_r.dance are relatively new kids when it comes to this record label business with only one title under their belts, but both Dancon1 and Pete Stormcrow have been busy on the promotion side of electronic music for many years now, and are residents at London's legendary bar and art space, The Foundry.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... rdance.htm

REVIEWS

Image
Evestus - Wastelands
Masterfully composed and performed, this is a truly evocative album that defies simple categorization and is sure to appeal to a wide audience, despite (or perhaps because) of the large amount of musical elements and influences which are skilfully and successfully merged in Evestus' compositions.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_evestus_w.htm

Image
Ghosts On Water - Ghosts On Water
Essential for fans of music in the drone ambient category. Many people who work in similar fields fall into the trap of being too repetitious and don't have near enough going on, something that "Ghosts on Water" avoids with a unique and very refreshing approach.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... er_gow.htm

Image
Cruise [CTRL] - Garmonbozia!
A strong release that is bound to garner a lot attention in clubs in both the electro and industrial scenes, if they get played. Musically, they know what they're doing, and their upcoming full length album sounds interesting, to say the least.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ctrl_g.htm

Image
Igor Krutogolov - White
Krutogolov seems to have a vision of the imagery and mood he wants to create from the very start and a mastery at achieving his aims. At times melodic, at others reflective, but always warm and enveloping, "White" invites you to sit down, listen and experience.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... olov_w.htm

Image
Contra - Enter The Winter
A strong album for fans of punishing electronics (not exactly in the extreme noise/power electronics way), or simply for those looking for something 'hard' but with fairly consistent beat to go along.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ra_etw.htm

Image
V/A - The Virus Has Been Spread - a tribute to Atari Teenage Riot
Definitely not for the faint-hearted, this is a compilation that smashes across musical boundaries (probably vandalising them as it passes as well) to showcase the massive influence Atari Teenage Riot had on the electronic scene.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_tvhbs.htm

Image
Virtual Server - Setup
Probably not the strongest DJ Ram work, "Setup" could've been much better, considering the amount of talent on offer and being produced by one of the strongest artists on today's Synthpop scene.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... rver_s.htm

MERCI ! :ami:

Interviews

Image
Greg Werckman - Ipecac Recordings
Created by Mike Patton (known for his work in Faith No More and Fantômas) and Greg Werckman (formerly of Alternative Tentacles), this is quite possibly one of the most interesting labels around at the momnet, releasing pretty much anything they like, regardless of genres or music trends.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... rdings.htm

Reviews

Image
Stendeck - Faces
A sublime journey through mind-bending, supple synths and ample chords, punctuated by crunchy, ductile beats. Distinguished by meticulous layering, rich veins of percussive noise, fat bass saturations and annihilating crescendos, the album is indicative of an imagination both otherworldly and tremendous.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... deck_f.htm

Image
Lingouf - Internazionale Fratricide
A record which displays enough uniqueness to easily blast away all those records that merely blast speakers, in a display of powerful, aggressive and inspired musicianship.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ouf_if.htm

Image
Gregorio Bardini - Sentilelle Del Mattino
Jarring but gorgeous, electronic but acoustic, Italian musician Gregorio Bardini offers up an unusual blend of folkish samples and instrumentation set to cascading IDM percussion and makes for a mysterious journey.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ni_sdm.htm

Image
Seventeen Migs Of Spring - Live in Hateiva
Highly competent and pleasingly hypnotic, and not a million miles from Nurse With Wound's recent live debut; they've certainly made the best of what's clearly a low-budget production and I hope they can bring the show outside of Israel some day.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ng_lih.htm

Image
Akron - Origins of the 7 Deadly Sins
Steeped in orchestral bombast and danceable drama, this current release from the Greek duo Akron makes for challenging but enjoyable listening. Eloquent as it is unrestrained, Akron combine classical virtuosity with digital expression in equally structured but emotive parts.

Interviews

Image
Nicolas Chevreux - Ad Noiseam
Founded as a spin-off of the successful webzine Recycle Your Ears, Ad Noiseam is an essential reference in the field of underground experimental electronics. With a varied roster along its 6-year existence Ad Noiseam is a dynamic label that does not show any signs of being stuck into a single music genre.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... oiseam.htm

Reviews

Image
Hansel - Lorentzian Lineshaper
The combination of Hansel's skeptical mindset and hybrid sound makes "Lorentzian Lineshaper" a formidable release, and its crowning touch must be the fantastic album artwork.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_hansel_ll.htm

Image
It-Clings vs. Pneumatic Detach - The All Too Logical Descent Into Madness
Aptly titled, one can't help but wonder if one isn't listening to the raging ramblings of a psychotic madman or, at the very least, a seriously maladjusted misanthrope. Someone who, if there was such a thing as a 'Thought Police', would be a prime candidate for execution for what goes on in his mind.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... atldim.htm

Image
Flint Glass + Telepherique - Information Gigabyte
Be aware that these tracks are not songs, these are sounds of electronic world amplified and overlaid until they create a tapestry of ones and zeros. When they find the rhythm to create structure, it is as much through randomness - the ghost in the machine - as it is through design.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... que_ig.htm

Image
Neuropa - The Blitz
Slightly edgier than previous releases, the new Neuropa offering is an enjoyable 80's retro album which, although lacking something in terms of progression, is sure to slowly grow on the listener.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... opa_tb.htm

Image
V/A - CrO2: A Tribute to Analog
The experimental and musique concréte scenes are exploding with a million better artists than the majority of artists showcased in this compilation.

Interviews

Image
Sometimes good music can easily slip by unnoticed even if one is on the lookout for it. That is especially true of very small labels like Killing Music, a young upstart synthpop label from Sweden. Picking up the torch for Scandinavian synthpop, Killing Music is a label to be on the lookout for in the future.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... gmusic.htm

Reviews

Image
Artur Nowak - Granulizer
A somewhat old release from the Polish EMD label, Artur Nowak's 2004 "Guitar Granulizer" is a 50 track concept release, on Nowak's experimentation on the sounds achievable through the application of a multitude of different effects on guitar sample tracks.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... owak_g.htm

Image
Niko Skorpio - Escape From Heaven
Although the mood is consistently dark and heavy throughout, "Escape from Heaven" is wonderfully constructed and, while it is occasionally quite harrowing and disturbing, the music is accomplished and carefully considered.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... io_efh.htm

Image
Element - Genocide
When viewed as a demo, the naive qualities of the recording fall away, leaving the listener suitably impressed with some pretty clever compositions.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_element_g.htm

Image
Godlike - It Will Be Godlike/Underground
At a time when electronic music is often accused of prioritising sound or genre accessibility over song writing - by way of automata, this single offers deliverance.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... _iwbgu.htm

Image
Xavier Charles & Robert Piotrowicz - ///
Although based largely around walls of noise, "///" is not overly harsh but is also quite challenging listening. There is some loose structure to the whole thing but don't expect any 'tracks' or 'songs', "///" is pure sound experimentation spread over a single 22-minute live performance.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... cz_iii.htm

Image
Supreme Court - Hypocrites + Saints
The final impression is one of insincerity. Musically, Supreme Court can be effortlessly slotted into the mix alongside acts like Aslan Faction or Grendel, but lack the emotional impact that either of the aforementioned offer the listener.

Reviews

Image
Signalform + Tachikoma - Understanding Media
Not quite beat-driven, but certainly not devoid of abstract rhythm, well-produced and squeaky-clean in its sound dynamics, "Understanding Media" won't necessarily provide any global communications epiphanies or surpass any typical IDM frontiers, but it will undoubtedly de-stress the hectic postmodern life.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... oma_um.htm

Image
Zonk't - -trope
Laurent Perrier is a name you definitly will hear more about in the future. A multi-talented musican / artist with much more capabilities then just one single style. And not many artists are capable of
excelling in multiple genres.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_zonkt_t.htm

Image
Glaukom Synod - Uczulony
This is still a fair deal better than so many of the other electro/noise/grindcore mashup bands out there, and all in all, despite the inherent problems mentioned, this is still a good release. Some of the songs really just makes you want to get up and rhythmically punch someone in the face!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ynod_u.htm

Image
Ova Looven - Gravity Has Expired
Combining the post punk and shoegaze of New York with a dreamier, electro-ambient toolkit, Ova Looven's new 12" single yields easy listening and sweetness but is by no means without depth.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... en_ghe.htm

Image
V/A - Beyond Ignorance And Borders
C-drik clearly understands the exotic allure of foreign sounds set in a contemporary experimental context but didn't quite get the balance right with this compilation, as many of the tracks sound a little generic and don't really connect the listener with their origins.

Peter Lee - Force Of Nature
The brainchild of Peter Lee, a DJ from Providence, Rhode Island, Force Of Nature has been an active label for over five years. Closely associated with the Rhode Island Noise/Industrial festival, and now Forced Distribution, Force Of Nature is an outlet for quality electronics, having been home to releases in genres that range from dark ambient and power eletronics to breakcore.

Reviews

Image
Tetra Plok - Fear Of A Blind Date
Tetra Plok is a throwback to the days of Punk and New Wave but a very original and well-produced one nevertheless, easily dwarfing most of what was released under the umbrella of the Electroclash trend.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... k_fobd.htm

Image
Elekore - Voluntary Human Extinction
Judging from this short album, Elekore is one of the few projects that can be honestly described as electronic punk music, as their music and dedication to it sounds as genuine as it gets and definitely more convincing than some higher-profile acts around.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... re_vhe.htm

Image
Nightech - Deviation
Affiliated with the Russian Lagunamuch community of abstract and ambient electronic artists, Nightech confronts us with the otherworldly vastness of the cold and empty reaches between the stars. Bleak drones and sinister reverberations characterize his music in "Deviation".
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... tech_d.htm

Image
Kirdec - Killed by a Coconut
Despite of the harsh, aggressive sound of "Killed by a Coconut", the tracks of this album are dedicated to the very delicate question of veganism and senseless animal slaughter. It's worth noting that this album, whether you like it or not, does force one to ponder the issue.

Squid - It-Clings, Rock'n'Roll Super God
Known for his participation in the T.I.K., Squid started his own record label, the viscerally named Bugs Crawling Out Of People. Concurrently he developed the persona of the Rock'n'Roll Super God It-Clings, an angry and misanthropic in the extreme spoken wordcore project which, following a string of colaborations with respected artists, recently released its full-length debut album.

Connect_icut - LA (An Apology)
So in the end we have a nice looking LP with two sides of great music that covers a lot of territory. If you happen to be a fan of Connect_icut's past work, you're in for a treat because "LA" definitely shows how far he's progressed since his first album.

One Man Nation - Rained And It Rained, Bullets It Rained
A high level of skill is shown in the music contained within, a convincingly delivered exercise in sophisticated and emotional electronica with some surprising instrumental elements to confound the listener's expectations.

Image
Dyspraxia - A Pound Of Flesh
At the cost of one pound British money, in addition to a witty pun, this is a great bargain. Hopefully, the money Dyspraxia makes with this release might lead to some interesting developments and improvements in his so far reasonably adequate work.

Marc Desforges - Geska Records
Geska Records is, in fact, the alliance of eternal music mingled with the body movements of those half-dressed souls still able to inspire the spiritual grace of great civilizations and all the sensual delight of our modernity.

Bleiburg - Way Of Crosses
If you're looking for an amalgam of the bizarre, Bleiburg's "Way of Crosses" is exactly what you need. At times militaristic, often bombastic, but always atmospheric, this record veers across genre borders resulting in a celebration of dark diversity.

Munkie - Dark Corners
Characterized by downtempo rhythms and unhurried lyricism, "Dark Corners" recalls the unmistakable, relaxed and soulful UK electro-lounge sound, and the band naturally evokes comparisons to such varied artists as Massive Attack, Portishead, Hooverphonic and Zero 7.

Interviews

Image
Albéric Giegger - [walnut + locust]
Simultatenously a music webzine and record label, the Montréal-based [walnut + locust] record label is one of those very small "do it yourself" record labels that so easily (and undeservedly) slips under the radar. Despite small, their output includes some rather interesting material from lesser-known talent and a few well-known acts from the field of experimental electronic music.

Reviews

Image
Amp - All Of Yesterday Tomorrow
Amp's ability to manually or electronically manipulate, transform and weave sound into haunting landscapes propels the battered psyche of our century into an uncharted domain. This is music for a genetically modified generation.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_amp_aoyt.htm

Image
Erthad - Gma
The music quite fast grasps you by your throat and gives you an uneasy feeling which lasts up onto somewhere in the midst of the third track. From that moment on you surrender to the feeling and you experience a certain beauty in its oppressive atmosphere.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_erthad_g.htm

Image
Lietterschpich - I Cum Blood In The Think Tank
Slow and heavy, noisey and nicely layered, full of agression and other emotions and actually good to play an several occasions. Best would be if you have the feeling the world is against you and you just want to react: you'll find soulmates in that by playing this album.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... cbittt.htm

Image
Samarkande / Oblivion Ensemble - Samarkande / Oblivion Ensemble
Sometimes we are being sent CD's and we don't know what to expect at all. When we get to listen we can e fully surprised by its beauty, without ever having heard of a project's name. And this split-release by the projects Samarkande and the Oblivion Ensemble is such an example.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_soe.htm

Image
Maurizio Bianchi + Maor Appelbaum - Environmental Meditations
There is a lot of good here in sound design and layering though some of the pieces seem a bit long and repetitious after awhile. It's a fairly good effort from both contributors and a lot more interesting than most the "noise" polluting CD and CD-R format these past few years...

Interviews

Image
Herwig Holzmann - Photophob
The main music-project of the prolific Austrian Herwig Holzmann, Photophob navigates between ambient, broken beats, electronica and idm, incorporating influences and inspiration from classic science fiction literature into his musical compositions. His is not music to dance to or to be pretentiously clever, it is music to take listeners away on oneiric journeys bound only by the frontiers of imagination.

Reviews

Image
Sonic Area - Explore
With "Explore" Sonic Area succeeded in surpassing expectations, which were comprehensibly set rather high after his previous album, and takes the listener on a disturbing and involving exploratory journey to the dark corners of the human psyche, the areas where instincts such as primal fear reside.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... area_e.htm

Image
Battery Cage - Product (2005)
As a whole, the album is primitive and raw, but that very rawness carries with it a sincerity lacking in many modern acts. Overall, the late-nineties influences are unmistakable, the tape hiss imperfections are endearing and the overriding feeling is one of nostalgia.

Reviews

Image
Social Ambitions - Burning
Much electronic music takes bedroom acts through a veritable minefield of pitfalls and clichés - armed with a flexible technology to write music and the desire to stand out - but blindfolded nevertheless. Social Ambitions use a sixth sense in their song writing and sound creation that allow them to pass through this unscathed.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ions_b.htm

Image
Nikka - Isotopos
With "Isotopos", the debut-album of Barcelona-based artist Nikka, the electronic music and art label/collective Lovethechaos (also from Barcelona) brings us a fourth release of quality precision experimental electronic music and exquisite design.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_nikka_i.htm

Image
Neurobash - Spoiled
This is serious fun, with well executed songs and decent production values though the overall offering is drenched in unselfconscious naiveté to say the least. If you're expecting hard EBM antichrists from this label, look elsewhere.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... bash_s.htm

Image
Quelles Paroles - What If I Would Die Right Here on The Spot?
There's not a great deal wrong with a band wearing its (Depechist) influences on its sleeves, nor is there anything wrong with attempting depth or comment on a deliberately saccharine platform. This release treads deep water in both of these areas but still has its moments.

Please note that after this update, Connexion Bizarre will not be updated until the first week of September as we are going on vacation. All site content will still be available as usual.

Reviewed this week were Empusae + Nick Grey "Simple Black Lines in a Diagram", The Infant Cycle "Playout", Telepherique "Slow Motion".
This week's webcast features "Z-Underground Lovers" with music selection by :JW: and "Out For Vacation" with music selection by M.

Sci Fi Industries "Drafts And Crafts" + Christopher Webster "Malus" CD+Book give-away
Image
Empusae + Nick Grey - Simple Black Lines in a Diagram
This is a disc that can and is almost meant to hit the mainstream, if only to showcase and share the enjoyment of this gem that would normally go undetected by the mass electronic music media and market. "Simple Black Lines in a Diagram" is meant for cult status.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... sbliad.htm

Image
The Infant Cycle - Playout
Two tracks of differing mood and presence, both with their merits and contrasting styles but both equally intriguing, presenting The Infant Cycle as an artist with a refined and well-versed ability to manipulate and reconstruct source sounds into something completely new and interesting.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ycle_p.htm

Image
Telepherique - Slowmotion
Dedicated to "people who try to simplify their life in modern times marked with materialism, business, stress and sickness", This disc is a very enjoyable experience and if Telepherique's other output is of this high of quality, he is definitely doing something right.

Interviews

Image
Andi Schramm - Fich-Art
Fich-Art was founded in late 1989 by the members of Ars Moriendi to promote their music. It is a non-commercial underground label which, in addition to its own tape and CD-R releases, features a huge backcatalogue of recent Ant-Zen artists
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... ichart.htm

Reviews

Image
Plastic Operator - Different Places
If you're looking for something completely different to the norm then this is totally an album you need to consider buying. To take a quote from the band themselves "Plastic Operator are the perfect pop group for our times".
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... tor_dp.htm

Image
Reptiljan - Archaeodermophagia
The main progression here is the conversion from working with digital means to completely analogue sound sources, and the dilution of noise with some surprisingly musical elements is the principal way in which this album stands out from the noise crowd.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ljan_a.htm

Image
Circumjecta - Ulchi Hop
If nervous breakdowns had soundtracks, "Ulchi Hop" - a selection of so-called "enigmatic rhythms and unknown harmony" by Russian composer/producer Circumjecta - would definitely be on the recommended listening list.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... cta_uh.htm

Image
Dunaewsky69 - Xquisite.Xcerpt
The sophomore release of the young Ukrainian label Kvitnu, "Xquisite.Xcerpt" features an evolvution from what seems a loose colection of ideas into robust, coherent and precise electronic compositions.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... y69_xx.htm

Image
The Garland Cult - Protect Yourself From Hollywood
If partying until dawn isn't really your scene then, at the very least, this album would create a pleasant soundtrack for relaxing with a tasty martini or putting on your makeup (regardless of gender).
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... t_pyfh.htm

Image
Neongrau - Spam'n'Space
Classic synthpop in the proper early 80's style, but inevitably with the benefit of modern recording technology to lend it a cleaner, smoother sound. A couple of tasteful and emotional tracks leave the impression that this is a band that could definitely become a name to watch out for in the future.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... au_sns.htm

Image
Mordacious - Torture Tactics
Mordacious' "Torture Tactics" displays some of the best and, unfortunately, worst harsh electro and EBM elements on offer today but, in the end, there are definite gems on this record. With time, his music can easily grow into mature, cynical brilliance, unconcerned with what others think.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ous_tt.htm

Image
Saemskin - A Simile For Murder
Saemskin might not be the best produced album, but it is certainly a courageous one. The tracks are extensive narrations of a surreal dimension populated by musical monsters; one that accepts hallucination as contractile fact.

Alexey Protasov and Natasha - Invasion Wreck Chords
Bringing the ethos of punk to the electronic and industrial scenes, Invasion Wreck Chords is the brainchild and publishing arm of Bielorussian heavy-electronics duo Ambassador21. In addition to Ambassador21, it is also home to acts such as Boot-Sector-Viruz, Monoid, Rasputeen and CTRLer.

Reviews

Image
Soiled - Shambolic Psychotic
Soiled is probably one of the more obscure (and thankfully unpolished) jewels of British fringe experimentalism whose music as a whole (not just "Shambolic Psychotic") deserves to be discovered and appreciated.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_soiled_sp.htm

Image
V/A - Women Take Back The Noise
A very strong collection of work by female Noise artists. If this is only a sample of what women are currently offering this scene, I think that the men who lazily blast feedback in the name of art have something to be truly scared of!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_wtbtn.htm

Image
Slow Soldier - New Under The Volt
An album equally suited for a IDM dancefloor mix, a breakneck road trip or a urban commute amongst wires, concrete, steel and the omnipresent haze of artificial light. If you have grown tired of banal beats and similar sounds then "New Under The Volt" is the refreshing break that you are looking for.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... r_nutv.htm

Image
Randy Greif & Kenji Siratori - Narcoleptic Cells
Only and wholly defined by ever-shifting sound, this otherwise characteristic dark ambient body, with its morphing atmospherics accompanied by infinitesimal moments of intelligible spoken word, is as good as it gets.

V/A - Whiteline Volume 2
"Whiteline Vol. 2" is a vinyl-only, limited edition release consisting of five exclusive tracks from a few rising artists in the post-industrial domain of noisy beats. A short format which could work for Aentitainment if only the tracks themselves were more forceful.

Interviews

Image
Jacek Kozlowski - Artoffact Records
During its 10 years of existence, this Canadian label has kept a consistent output of quality releases featuring artists from all over North America and Europe. In addition to counting with some rather well-known artists in their roster, Artoffact Records was also responsible for the debut of acts like Urceus Exit and Cabaret from Poland.

Reviews

Image
Erdem Helvacioglu - Altered Realities
The sublime odyssey of "Altered Realities" is an inspired nomadic epic, and although there exist some moments more shadowed than others, it is overall a joyful paean of spiritual awakenings..
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... glu_ar.htm

Image
V/A - Modus Vivendi Vol.2
An excellent compilation that will definitely give you a way out of your empty, meaningless mockery
of a desk life and into a sunnier, warmer place, right up to the cool night party by the beach, in just 61 minutes. Just make sure you don't get fired for daydreaming on it.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_mvmv2.htm

Image
Sci Fi Industries - Drafts And Crafts
The album in its entirety is a very powerful and energetic work, housing immense aggression in its sound without succumbing to the rigid cliché of obligatory harshness of the genre. Sci Fi Industries manages to make cold look cool (pun intended) instead of forced with this release.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... es_dac.htm

Image
Darren Tate - Small Worlds
Tate's latest release, "Small Worlds," is precisely as its title implies - windows seemingly opened in the air, cutting through the very substance of atmosphere and reality to offer fathomless views into realms both mystical and (ironically) minute.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ate_sw.htm

Image
Phragments - The Burning World
If you enjoy dramatic martial overtures and neo-classical post-industrial anthems but feel alienated by the political claptrap offered by other artists in the genre, this is the release for you.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ts_tbw.htm

Image
Battery Cage - A Young Person's Guide to Heartbreak
"A Young Person's Guide to Heartbreak" is the second release from this US-based four-piece to be released through the Metropolis label. With a pretty good track record and a sizeable following under their belt, Battery Cage naturally have some expectations set.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... aypgth.htm

Image
Control Alt Deus - Control Alt Deus (demo 2007)
Within a genre as oversaturated with mediocrity as that of dark electro (or "Endzeit EBM", or "Hellektro", or what-have-you) it is a rare pleasure to find something fresh and aurally stimulating hidden amongst the dross. Control Alt Deus' eponymous demo EP affords exactly this.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ad2007.htm

Image
Schultz - BioMekanikal
A fair first effort, but terribly naïve. Schultz has his work cut out for him, developing the basis he has into something more complex and aurally exciting for a second release.

Interviews

Image
Christopher Braucks and C. Constantin Reineck - Æntitainment
"Like seahorses we care a lot about our babies. We don't want them to be sold at supermarkets or megastores. Like good fathers we carefully choose their environment, because we really don't want them to share a cashdesk with toasters, nosehaircutters and mobilephones."
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... inment.htm

Reviews

Image
V/A - Imaginary Friends
An excellent showcase of what Sublight Records was about: uncompromising quality electronics from IDM and downtempo breakbeats to drum'n'bass/jungle, breakcore and even some rock electronics. The music released by Sublight Records probably wasn't for everyone but its overall quality is undeniable.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_im.htm

Image
ManicProject - Square0ne
It is overall an intelligent record, but not nearly dark enough, electronic enough or emotional enough. Brilliant execution, meticulous attention to detail and more commercial potential than you can poke a stick at make for an easy choice for your average sheep at the record store.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ject_s.htm

Image
Freeze Etch - Perjorative
"Pejorative" ends up as nothing more than a broken promise - albeit one that looks really good. It could almost be likened to dating someone that is beautiful but dumb as bricks: your friends may show great interest in the exterior aspects, but there's zero intellectual stimulation involved.

Interviews

Image
Ben Arp - Crunch Pod
Crunch Pod is an American industrial music label and online web store currently based near Sacramento, California. Crunch Pod, the label, began in 1998 and has grown from a small, limited edition only CDR label to the home to such acts as Caustic, C/A/T, Cervello Elettronico and Manufactura.

Reviews

Image
Susan Matthews - Hope Bound
More positive in mood than Matthews' previous albums but, while the sound is generally more polished, the intensity of feeling and experimental qualities are all still there. Matthews continues to go from strength to strength with each release, offering something new and interesting every time.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ews_hb.htm

Image
JapaneseCARCRASH - BADmachine
Texan musician Casey LeBleu, being neither Japanese nor sounding anything like a car crash, fortunately, has produced plenty of quite enjoyable synthpop moments.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... rash_b.htm

Image
Plastic Violence - Dog Series
During the Chinese year of the dog, Italian experimentalists Plastic Violence released twelve monthly mini-CD singles with canine-themed covers. The tracks are an interesting bunch, generally pretty lo-fi, and Plastic Violence aren't afraid to add noise to the mix.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... nce_ds.htm

Image
Six Twilights - Six Twilights
Very gentle and ever so slightly folky experimental electronica mostly dominated by manipulated voices and backed up by minimal loops possibly generated by guitars more often than synths. All lovely stuff, just as long as you're not easily bored and you can allow sentimental feelings for simple things.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... hts_st.htm

Image
Concise - Revive / Flaque - Mindscapes / X_Dynamics - Regular Loader Routine
Three full-length CDs, by three bands that don't really have much in common, packaged together for about the price of one album. Good value, you might say, but what's the point, even though there's plenty of folks out there who will like the sound of this collection?
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_concise_r.htm

Image
FrightDoll - Reference Version
You don't even have to listen to this album to tell it's going to be awful. The fact that it's released on an eponymous record label sets alarm bells ringing, as does the dubious imagery of FrightDoll posing smugly in PVC attire over a generic black and red background of circuitry and stars.

Reviews

Image
Avsky - Silent Decay
Avsky is Norwegian and his first album, "Silent Decay", manages to create almost arctic atmospheres, yet still make them sound warm to a certain extent. Because of this the CD knows quite a nice duality (read: tension). Or perhaps this should be considered a schizoid defect?
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_avsky_sd.htm

Image
Cenotype - Origins
Origins" is very aptly titled, hinting at the influences behind the act in general as well as the within the record which, despite its faults, is a great release, working on the proven formula of solid, industrial rhythmic noise, with enough of Cenotype's personal twist so as not to sound unoriginal.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... type_o.htm

Image
Pure H - Signia
The various interpretations of "Signia" are each supplied with a unique title (presumably contributed by the remixing artist), and although they span a variety of genres, the remixes exhibit a startling homogeneity in sound and, in some respects, style.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_va_im.htm

Image
Photophob - Circadian Rhythms
Photophob's music has an upbeat yet abstract quality set to playful synth lines that harks back to the early days of "intelligent dance music" and the heyday of labels like Rephlex and Warp. Although "Circadian Rhythms" initially appears to be a homage to classic IDM, it soon takes a new direction.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... hob_cr.htm

Image
Storybox - No Dancing Allowed
If you are a fan of the music from the early era of electronic pop music (circa 1980-83) then perhaps this might be worth looking into. However, I can't help but think that if you are not going to give the sound a slight update, then maybe some things should be left as they were.

Susan Matthews - Siren Wire
"I'm not familiar with the work of the majority of the bands/artists I've been compared to. I came to this via an aborted classical music education coupled with an interest in popular music. (...) For a few years I consciously put myself into a bubble, I switched myself off to other people's music so that I could focus on my own in a very pure way, to really discover my 'sound'."
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... tthews.htm

Image
Igor & Tanya - The Eastern Front
Israel is probably not the place where one would normally expect to find a record label with a catalog spanning martial music, darkfolk, industrial and noise experimentalism. And yet, that is the kind of material being released by this young label and its noise/experimental side-label T'an! Kaven!! Ash!!!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/intervi ... nfront.htm

Reviews

Image
Welle:erdball - Chaos Total
"Chaos Total" is an excellent album full of exciting and moving synthpop anthems produced in the true Welle:Erdball style. That is all you should need to know, end of review!
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... all_ct.htm

Image
Dirtward - Utopia:Banished
"Dirtward" is pure industrial rock from the moment it hits. The apparently single-man project Utopia:Banished has taken a good, hard look back at mid-90s North American coldwave and forged ahead with all the production and genre-bending the intervening years have come to offer.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews ... ard_ub.htm

Image
Machinochrist - Escape From Woolwich Arsenal
As a debut album, "Escape From Woolwich Arsenal" is a very solid piece of work and sets the bar pretty high for subsequent offerings by Machinochrist. Powerful and sincere-sounding, it is bound to appeal to breakcore and hardcore fans, as well as please some industrial music adepts.

Reviews

Red Needled Sea - Old River Blues
Red Needled Sea has a lot to be proud of with "Old River Blues". In fact, several moments here and there are reminiscent of drone luminaries such as Andrew Chalk, which means Alexiades has to be doing something right.

Bisclaveret vs. Bruno - Les Mannequins
The lack of variety is a repeated offense by Bisclaveret, which is a shame since the duo has a talent at creating dark soundscapes. Either way, this album is recommended for those seeking a little more literary substance to their bleak soundtracks.

O T X - A World In Red
Atmosphere, rhythm, sound: "A World In Red" neglects nothing that could make up a strong electronica release. Moving from cool, dry string textures to full, warm subsonic swells, it creates a ground onto which merciless percussion, bells and arpeggios patter like rain.

Cordell Klier - Measure Here And Be Now
"Measure Here And Be Now," by the multi-talented American experimental artist Cordell Klier, is very minimal ambient. Almost nothing happens but, luckily, what little does happen is generally pleasing to the trained ear and the tracks move and develop as slowly as the hour hand on a clock.
